I drilled a hole in the bottom to serve as a stand mount, and it's a great way to support the piece while I'm working on it. The base colors are several shades of Tamiya grey paint.
The engines were metallic paint. Blue and white paint is hand-brushed on to represent engine exhaust.
I made contrasting panels by slightly tinting the base color, then applying lots of Tamiya tape that I cut into tiny rectangles. The effect should be just noticeable.
The decals were applied with Future floor acrylic. First the Future was airbrushed on until I've achieved a glossy finish, then the decals were applied using fresh Future to help snugle the decal against the model. The decals are allowed to dry and then an overcoat of Future is applied. When dried, the decals should look like they were painted on. I added some weathering with black pigment powder to give it a battle-worn look. The pigment must be varnished over to prevent it from being rubbed off.
Engine detail is picked out with a variety of metallic paints and a small brush.
I gave the underside and engines a grime wash of Humbrol Black enamel paint heavily thinned with turpentine. After that is dried, I applied a matte varnish is applied to give the model a greater sense of scale and to protect the finish from handling.
Here she is. Don't mess with Bajor!
The final Photoshop composite. Onto the Cardassia Prime!
