Here's a test of my final base coat mix: 1 bottle of Tamiya Flat White (XF-3) 24 drops of Tamiya Deck Tan (XF-55), and 4 drops of Tamiya RLM Grey (XF-22). You can see the base coat on the front of the antenna dish. I pre-shaded with Tamiya German Grey (XF-63), then applied the base coat, fairly well diluted with 91% alcohol. It still looks white or very light grey, but it's got some warmth to it.
I turned the pressure on the compressor down to about 18 psi, and shot some base coat onto the backside of the dish. This gave a rough mottle that I hope, when the salt particles are brushed off, will result in an weathered metal look. I only want this to show through the paint chips. I used some coarse kosher salt along with some finer sea salt as a mask for the paint chip effect. What I did was wet an area with water applied with a cotton bud, then sprinkled some salt and arranged it to look sort of like the photo references I have on hand. The water is allowed to dry thoroughly and then I can apply the basecoat.
There are 2 sections of a darker color on the back of hte dish. I masked them off with Tamiya masking tape, trying not to dislodge any of the salt.
Then I lightly sprayed on a darker grey color. In some pictures, it looked like it had a slight green or concrete hue. So I mixed about 6 drops of Tamiya Medium Grey (XF-20), with 2 drops of Tamiya RLM Grey (XF-22), and 2 drops of my base coat.
After that has dried, I removed the masking tape and with a cotton swab wetted with water, I removed the salt mask. Finally, to give it another layer of tone, I hand brushed on some straight RLM Grey to represent the raw metal.
I oversprayed more base color until the preshading color is just barely visible. After this, I'll give it some gloss varnish then a dark wash. There's also 2 small orange rectangles near the 12 and 6 o' clock position that I'll paint in. A final matte varnish and this bit will be done!
