Box Art
The kit came well packed in Dark Horses usual, high-quality box and form-fitting styrofoam inserts. I think I could drop-kick this thing and the fragile cold-cast parts woldn't crack.
The art is drawn by Ray Harryhausen.
Parts Breakdown
The kit is comprised of 5 ivory colored, cold-cast resin pieces plus metal chain and eyelets to make Kong's shackles.
I got lucky! Ray Harryhausen happened to be at the Monster Modelfest in Boston when I picked up this kit, so I got him to sign the bottom of the platform. There is a metallic gold label underneath the platform with Dark Horse's copyright notice.
Mail-In Premium
There was a postcard that came with the kit. It was for a mail in premium--5 white metal figures: Carl Denham, Ann Darrow, and 3 news photographers, watching helplessly just as Kong breaks his metal bonds.
A close-up of Denham and Anne.
"Hey cut it out boys. He thinks you're hurting the girl!"
Gallery
This was a very easy kit to put together. With only a bit of seam work and some minor puttying it was ready for paint. I painted Kong with Tamiya acrylics and used some powdered pigment to highlight areas of his face and chest. I used Zap-A-Gap gap-filling cyanoacrylate glue to assemble the parts and to freeze Kong's chains into position. I pinned the figure and the crucifix to the platform with brass rod and epoxy glue.
