Black Sun Raptor Box art

The Raptor is the multi-mission workhorse of the Colonial Fleet. Although the Vipers usually take center stage during a battle, the Raptors are an indespensible component to Galactica's arsenal, performing a vast array of functions as ship escort, intelligence gathering and reconnaisance, weapons platform, and long range scout. Without it's compliment of Raptors, Galactica's ability to protect itself and the Rag-tag fleet would be extremely limited.

Black Sun Models has released this smaller scale Raptor. It includes a full interior, vacuformed canopy and water-slide decals. Casting is mostly very clean with little seam lines and no air bubbles. There's some softness in the detail overall and a bit of roughness in the rear wall where the engines attach to the hull but some careful prep work should take care most of these issues. There are 2 canopies in case the builder screws up, so you get 2 chances to get it right! The canopy shows a slight uneveness in texture, so it will have to be polished out and given a high-gloss coat of either Future floor polish or acrylic gloss. The interior has plenty of detail, and you can attach the door in the raised position to show it all off, but even if you choose to close it up, the canopy is pretty large, so you would have a good view of the interior.

Black Sun Raptor Nose

Nose of the craft. There's a bit of softness in the details but at this small scale, I think it should look good with a nice paint job and weathering.

Note from CED: The softness of the detail in the nose area is due to the layer of primer originally applied to the pattern.

Cockpit The cockpit is nicely detailed, although I think the chairs look simplified, basically several thick slab forms and some sculpted cushions. I haven't seen any pictures of the chairs, but this maybe a part that can be improved upon either through modifying the parts or scratchbuilding a set of chairs with more detail. Also notice a small break on the upper corner of the hull. This is where the pour sprues were nipped off. Care must be taken in cleaning these areas up.
Interior The interior is quite nice. I left off the chair for a better view. The parts were temporarily attached with museum mounting wax. There's plenty of room for adding even more detail. The more adventurous builder might even add some internal lighting!
